Wish I liked him but I don't! Is there something I'm missing about this guy? I've been watching Bored to Death and it's not great. Watching it is like watching an Encyclopedia Brown "mystery" come to life. Except with adults. Zach Galifianakis & Ted Danson are funny - but even they can't save the show. Jason Schwartzman is playing the same twerpy character that annoyed me so much in Rushmore. People seem to really like that movie but I couldn't finish it. Jason's character was like a less funny Clifford.

He was recently on Fresh Air. You should really listen take a listen. I think we all know that he is cousins with Sofia Coppola and Nicholas Cage. I didn't know that his mom is Francis Ford Coppola's sister, Talia Shire. She was best known for her roles as Connie in the Godfather movies and Adrian in the Rocky movies. Terry Gross tries to pull something - anything! - from him to talk about growing up in the Coppola family. Jason Schwartzman completely dismisses it. I can understand that he wants to be judged on his own merits, but seriously! He got his first audition with Wes Anderson from a family friend. I feel like he can't deny that it helped to be part of a successful Hollywood family. I guess I would like to see him embrace them more because I don't believe he is that talented to begin with. At least if he embraced and thanked them I could understand why he is famous.

Other things to listen for in the interview - Wes Anderson and Jason Schwartzman bonded over their love of an album called Pinkerton from a band called Weezer. CrAzY. He also co-wrote the song for Bored to Death. The song and his describing of "his process" for writing it pretty much sealed the deal that I am not a fan.

I can't talk about Bored to Death, but I like JS--he has this nice little quality to him that's just appealing, for some reason!
Re: Fresh Air, I heard part of that interview and he did talk about his family some, and early influences and stuff. I mean, I couldn't talk about what it was like to grow up in the Titchener family any more than he could talk about the Schwartzman family...it's just too familiar! He can't know how it looks to outsiders.
susan, you always make me LOL!
I have to say, I liked him in Rushmore, but NOTHING after that.
have you seen him in Shopgirl? hilarious, can't decided if I love him or hate him for being such a goon, although the hate feeling is stronger. Can't wait to listen to that!
also, yes, connections are everything PEOPLE! So true in the art world. You have to be born into it or network like a crazy person. Very few people who are famous actually "earned" that. if its something worth earning anyway.
OMG speaking of getting ahead on family connections, somebody should do a post on Lena Dunham after they see her movie or show or whatever makes it to NC first. I just read this New Yorker article about her and she seems likeable enough (to me) but I can also see where she'd be super obnoxious to some people.

Also interesting because she's 2 years younger than us! Kids today!
I think the absolute worst thing I've ever seen him in was I Heart Huckabees. That could be my #1 worst movie of all time.
Yes, even I am not crazy about I <3 Huckabees...and this is coming from a Marky Mark fan! It was just bad bad bad.
The way you feel about JS is the way I feel about Martin Short, funny you should mention him. I HATED Clifford.
I listened to that interview too and thought it was odd that Uncle Francis seemed to get a big yawn from jolly ol' JS. Though I've never managed to form an opinion of him either way, I mostly just don't believe that he didn't see The Godfather until he was a teenager, and wasn't very affected by his mother's part in it.
I did kind of like his Darjeeling Limited character though.
To Andy... how dare you hate Clifford. I agree with you Susan. I've actually liked a lot of movies that Schwartzman is in, but he's always the same character in all of them, and they are just so darn unappealing.
