What's the deal with:

1) "Toxins"? I can't find anything besides Wikipedia and 10000000+ advertisements to tell me what toxins are and how I can cleanse them from my body. So I eat only lemon juice and cayenne pepper for 21 days, and "toxins" are cleared from my "system." Does this mean I'll never get cancer? What are all the toxins currently living in my body up to: making cancer?

2) Genetically engineered salmon? This was all over the news yesterday and I have no idea why. Or again: what specifically will happen to you if you eat it? Looks fine to me, + if it can protect native species from overfishing, + if it can increase the world food supply, what's the problem?

I know these could be obvious things to most people, which is why I ask. I really want to know! Tell me what's up.

While we're at it, somebody please explain antioxidants to me. I ain't complaining about free license to drink red wine and coffee + eat chocolate, grapes, and berries, but what's the big whoop?

Why should I drink a shot of japanese wheatgrass (legit on sale at the fresh market for $4) if I'll be drinking 3 glasses of wine tonight anyway????

I think the antioxidants thing is way out of control. I read that the FDA is coming down on POM juice for saying that it can basically cure cancer and make you fly because of the presence of antioxidants. I think there is some science behind it saying they slow the development of cancer, but I think the studies are also dispusted. They run the line of not bad for you, but is the evidence bogus? With that notion, places like whole foods can run with it because people want to feel like they're being healthy.

The genetically engineered salmon really freaks me out. I understand the argument about protecting native species, but basically genetically engineering our food (even more so then we already do!) seems dangerous since studies don't show the long-term effects of this type of food on our bodies. We probably won't even know the effects of this until 100+ years from now and the idea of being a guinea pig for this is freaky.

antioxidants...so trendy right now! they kill 'free radicals' which cause cell damage. free radicals exist in all of our bodies...maybe some cell damage is okay...that which doesn't kill our cells makes our cells stronger, right???

Yeah, and what did we do before the discovery of antioxidants?

Were our cells just...DYING??????? We're lucky to be here!
