Miley Cyrus

It's hard to ignore Party in the USA. The first time I heard it, I thought "this is horrible". After a few more listens on the radio, I realized I wasn't changing the station. I youtubed her "controversial" performance at the Teen Choice Awards where she pole dances. Or as Miley & the Cyrus fam say, "she's just dancing on an ice cream truck". It's true, she is, but also, come on! We get what's implied. It's clearly over the top, but after watching the whole thing I think more than trying to be sexy, she just comes off as really uncomfortable and awkward. Check out her awkward facial grimace after the show is over. Also awkward at the end: the God shout-out. I imagine this is some brilliance from Billy Ray that differentiates Miley from Britney's early performances. I could care less if she's trying to experiment with her sexuality or whatever way they put it...but let's just admit that's what you're doing and not try to pretend it's anything different. I think we all remember the Annie Leibovitz "omg we had no idea she'd just be wearing a sheet" controversy from this family.

I think the thing about Party in the USA that gets me the most is her voice (also the chorus - does she need to say "and a britney song was on" 3 times??). We all know it's not great. But as compared to her last single The Climb, Party in the USA sounds like a completely different person singing. I get that it's auto-tuned, but even more then that it sounds like she's had something corrected with her vocal cords. Judge for yourself!

Something to think about for best/worst lyrics ever - "noddin' my head like yeah, movin' my hips like yeah".

Good Stuff

Came home to watch last night's American Idol.  Then watched Tony Kornheiser's predictions on PTI.  He's right, it is Go Time.  As in, Megan Joy has got to go.  She totally blew it all last night and I hope America will wise up and stop voting based on looks.  After her I think Anoop and Matt Giraud might be in trouble.  But I hope not for Matt's sake.  He's my fave! (this was the best quality video I could find - sorry about that!)

And I found a classic clip I used to make Lauren watch over and over again.  This clip is great on many levels.  For one - Bon Jovi week??  I think we all know what a classic songbook that is (yikes!).  Jon's Philly Soul tee is classic and his total hatred for Blake's version:  "This is a song that a lot of people don't want messed with".  What people is he talking about?  This is before the advent of Kara DioGuardi as a judge.  It was a good time.

Summer Heights High: My New Favorite Show

In Part 2 of my week visiting with Liza, I've had the opportunity to see her new favorite tv show: Summer Heights High. She brought over the DVD last night and now it is my new favorite tv show. Too bad it might not get picked up for a second season :( Apparently American audiences don't respond well to Australia-specific race issues and some of the more offensive humor bits (for example, half of Mr. G's jokes are based on him being real effeminate; they make rape jokes; there's other stuff etc. etc. sorta boring "controversy"). It could also have to do with the fact that we've had our share of reality-inspired sitcoms. OR actually, I just found out that there just wasn't enough material to stretch over more than 1 season. Whatev though!

It is like The Office except it's Australian and takes place at a high school. For the most part, it's really funny although a lot of it was just more entertaining than anything else. Like one character's graffiti tag is a picture of a penis and then "tation," like "dictation," and it's funny at first and then just ehhh. I think I like Ja'mie best. When she says "public school is so random!" I especially love it--he totally nails that type of girl (I didn't want to mention it at the time but Liza herself used to be very much like that). Anyway, here it is.

Mr. G is their drama teacher.

Like I said, Ja'mie is the best!

WINNIE AND SUSAN'S SPRING FLING BIRTHDAY PARTY

My birthday is April 23, and Susan's is April 16, and we're having a birthday/spring fling theme party at my house on April 18. Just so you can plan ahead!!

The biggest thing on my mind lately is what is the best theme for a spring fling party? I know that i want to wear some fly press-on nails and maybe false eyelashes, but is "drag queens" even a party theme?

What are some good themes? Any ideas??????

For now, here's a song by Sufficient artist Snowman & Furball (and 1/2 of S& F is 1/3 of Chairlift, stars of the ipod nano commercial) that's been in my head lately. Think it over!

Memorial Day 2000, or Camping: Part 3

I first saw this on VHS at Bruce St. with Rob and Heather (the tape belongs to Heather). The founder of Found magazine found it at a garage sale in Michigan. Seriously, these are real people! THAT'S THE CRAZY PART. A synopsis: some rednecks go on vacation in RVs with their 4-wheelers and drink a ton of beer and mess around with mud and nightvision goggles and stuff, and their accents are hilarious to the point where everything they say sounds like a joke.

It reminds me somewhat of The Barbeque, which I was told was a piece of evidence in some kind of trial (my dad's former law partner did mostly criminal defense...and wasn't too ethical sometimes w/r/t discovery aka evidence). The Barbeque is about a fight that breaks out during a church picnic and leaves pretty much everyone there stripped of their dignity--and their clothes, although it's not sexual at all. It's awful to watch. The first and only time I watched it was with Katie Z, Paddles, and maybe Corey and a few other people, and I want to apologize to all of them: sorry guys! Memorial Day 2000 is much more fun to watch.
